IC Insights: Last year Fabless accounted for 33% of the total revenue of the global semiconductor market, a record high
ICInsights yesterday announced the sales and growth rates of Fabless and IDM in 2020. The data shows that Fabless's sales surged 24% last year, while IDM only increased 8%.
ICInsights updated the latest version of the "McClean Report" (McCleanReport). The latest data in April showed that the growth rate of global Fabless and IDM sales is very different.
Under normal circumstances, the sales growth rate of Fabless is higher than that of IDM, but there are exceptions. In 2010, IDM revenue increased by 35%, while Fabless revenue increased by 29%.
In the past two years, the growth momentum of these two types of semiconductor companies has been significantly different. The memory market performed poorly in 2019. IDM revenue dropped by 20%, compared to Fabless's revenue dropped by only 1%. In 2020, Fabless revenue increased by 24%, while IDM only increased by 8%.
Even counting the booming years of 2017 and 2018 (IDM’s revenue increased by 31% and 16% respectively in these two years), IDM’s compound growth rate from 2010 to 2020 is only 3%, which is higher than that of the entire world over the same period. The compound growth rate of the semiconductor market is one percentage point lower. In contrast, the average annual growth rate of Fabless is 8%, which is twice the total compound annual growth rate of the semiconductor market in the same decade.

Due to the obvious difference in the revenue growth rate of the two types of companies, Fabless's share of total growth has increased except in 2010, 2015, 2017, and 2018, as shown in the following figure:
In 2002, Fabless's revenue accounted for only 13% of the entire semiconductor market. With the surge in the storage market in 2017 and 2018, Fabless's share has been declining in the past two years. However, the trend of the storage market declined in 2019, and this situation was reversed. Fabless's share jumped 4.1 percentage points that year to 29.9%.
